Below is a short summary of North Vancouver District and West Vancouver District tree permit requirements. District of North Vancouver
Permit required for private property if:
- Tree is greater than 75cm diameter measured at 1.3 meters above ground level
- Tree is within 15m of the top of bank of a stream
- Tree is within 30m of the top of bank of a stream for properties greater than 0.5 ha
- Tree is within 10 metres of the top of bank of a ravine more than 60 metres wide
- Tree is on a slope greater than 30% (16.5 degrees)
- Tree is a Pacific Yew, Arbutus, Gary Oak, Oregon Ash, Western White Pine or Yellow-cedar
If any of the above conditions apply, the first step is to submit an arborist report to the District. The tree will then be inspected by the municipal arborist and you will be informed when the permit is ready for pickup.

Permit required for private property if:
- Trees within Creek Corridors and Foreshore
- Trees within covenant areas
- Tree has a diameter of 75cm or greater
If any of the above conditions apply, submit an application to the District, along with an arborist report and a $300.00 application fee paid to the municipality. The tree will then be inspected by the municipality and your arborist will receive the permit.
If tree is on municipal land
- Call the West Vancouver Parks Department if you think the tree is a risk. 604-925-7192
- If tree is not high risk – fill out a permit application.
- Get 80% of affected neighbours’ signatures.
- Submit complete application with appropriate fee to the District.
